This walkthrough covers the fastest path from a new account to a working team on GovernAI — connecting identity, setting policy, and inviting your first users. Most teams complete every step below in under an hour.
- Create your account and workspace. Sign up and confirm your organization's primary domain — this is what GovernAI uses to verify new users during SSO setup.
- Connect SSO. From Admin → Identity, connect your identity provider (Okta, Entra ID, Google Workspace, or any standard SAML/OIDC provider). This lets access follow your existing group membership instead of a separate user list to maintain.
- Invite your first team. Add a team in Admin → Teams and invite members either individually or by syncing an SSO group. Each team gets its own usage dashboard and budget from the start.
- Set a content and safety policy. Start from the default policy template in Admin → Policies and adjust it for your organization — most teams keep the defaults for their first week and refine them once they see real usage patterns.
- Connect your first knowledge source. Under Connectors, link a document store, wiki, or shared drive your team references often. Indexing typically completes within a few minutes for most connector types.
- Set a team budget. In Admin → Budgets, set a monthly ceiling and an alert threshold (most teams start at 80%) so spend is visible before it becomes a surprise.
- Send the first invite. Team members receive an email with a direct link — no separate password to set up if SSO is already connected.
- Check the audit log. After the first few conversations, confirm entries are appearing in Admin → Audit Log exactly as expected before rolling out to additional teams.
What to do in week two
Once your first team is live, the highest-value next step is usually connecting a second knowledge source and reviewing the Cost & Savings dashboard to see where routing and caching are already reducing spend automatically — most teams don't need to configure anything further for these to start working.
